SIP Trunking to Replace My Landline Phone Using Plivo

Max Masnick writes: I’ve been experimenting with using Plivo’s SIP trunking to supplement the terrible cell service at my house. SIP is a protocol for making voice calls. It’s like HTTP for telephones.
As someone who is incensed by poor-quality phone calls, I’ve been extremely impressed with the good call quality and robustness of Plivo. As a programmer and home automation hobbyist, I’m excited about being able to control my SIP phones with Plivo. And as a poor price-conscious graduate student, I appreciate Plivo’s low pay-by-usage pricing.

SIP trunking to the rescue
As I said, the cellular phone service at my house is terrible. Pretty much every call is unintelligible or dropped within a few minutes.
I’m not willing to pay an evil corporate monopoly $30+/month for a landline (cough cough Comcast). While researching alternatives to a landline, I discovered that there are awesome cloud telephony services with usage-based pricing that offer a huge amount of flexibility and customizability. With a little bit of work, using Plivo’s SIP trunking I was able to roll my own fully customizable SIP phone system with excellent call quality at a fraction of the price of a landline phone system.
Step 1: SIP endpoint
A SIP endpoint is like an email address for a phone. Someone can place a call to your endpoint using your address (in a format like sip:you@phone.plivo.com) and the SIP phone you have connected to your endpoint will ring.
If you try Googling for “SIP trunking,” you might be surprised to see how many providers there are. Unfortunately, a lot of them seem like relics from the early 2000s, are expensive, and/or are geared for the enterprise. I ended up using Plivo because they (a) charge only for usage, (b) are developer-friendly, and (c) I had heard of them because they were in Y Combinator, the Super Bowl of startup incubators.
I wrote Skype Replacement, a guide to setting up a SIP endpoint using Plivo, a while back on my blog, so if you want more details on this process go ahead and check that out.
Step 2: SIP phone
There are both hardware and software SIP phones that work with SIP trunking. It’s super easy to set up a software SIP phone: There’s a free Mac SIP phone called Telephone that works out of the box with a Plivo endpoint. Some paid SIP phones may work better (Telephone is pretty bare-bones), but I haven’t tested any.
If you’re serious about telephony, you’ll want a hardware SIP phone. In my experience the call quality is better and it’s always on, so I don’t miss calls if I accidentally close my software SIP phone. I bought a Cisco SIP phone that has excellent build and sound quality and works great with Plivo. It doesn’t have a speakerphone, which is a bummer when I’m sitting on hold, but I like it otherwise. The SPA 303 SIP phone is also worth looking into.
I also have an OBi110, which is a magic box that converts any traditional phone into an internet-based SIP phone. It works with Google Voice as well as SIP. It works out of the box with Plivo and the configuration is substantially easier than that for the Cisco phones, but I have it hooked up to an ancient handset so the quality isn’t great.

No matter what you do, use a wired network instead of Wi-Fi. Voice quality over Wi-Fi is dramatically worse than over Ethernet.
Step 3: Integration
I use Google Voice in conjunction with Plivo to hook my cell phone up with my SIP phone and to provide voicemail service. (Or you could build a voicemail system using Plivo.) Here’s what I did.
- Connect a phone number to my Cisco’s SIP endpoint via the Plivo dashboard.
- Add this number to Google Voice and set it to forward calls there along with my cell phone.
- Forward calls to my cell phone back to Google Voice so my Cisco phone rings if someone directly calls my cell phone. Here’s the option I selected under the advanced options for my cell phone in Google Voice:

- Turned on custom “do not disturb” settings for my SIP number in Google Voice so I don’t have to remember to turn the ringer off.
Your SIP phone is all set. What’s next?
Google Voice is OK, but the features haven’t changed much since it was introduced years ago. I’d like to make a custom-designed, one-of-a-kind bespoke version of Google Voice with some awesome features, like:
- Mute my phone when my house’s alarm system is in “away” or “night” mode, instead of relying on the time-based do not disturb settings in Google Voice.
- Change the order phones ring in based on whether or not I’m home.
- Place calls with a web interface (like Google Voice) but with enhanced features like setting up conference calls and one-click dialing for frequent contacts.
And a few more ideas…
- Custom voicemail system with per-contact messages. You could tell that annoying friend who leaves you voicemails to not leave you voicemails (or just disable voicemail entirely for certain contacts).
- Remember how I was complaining about my Cisco phone not having a speakerphone? I’m pretty sure it’s possible to set up a software phone to serve as a speaker phone over my computer’s speakers. With WebRTC, this could potentially be done in-browser.
- If I thought I could live with myself, I would have a virtual secretary who places my calls and only connects me after the other person answers. Technically possible, very douchy.
I think it would be awesome to have a system like this available as an open source application you could run on your own server or Heroku. But until this exists, I’m just happy to be able to properly hear my phone calls again.

A web-based analytics tool can’t measure the ROI of offline ads (TV, radio, print), and even with online channels, it can only account for clicks. Phone-based leads drop into a black hole. What is call tracking?
Call tracking software measures the number and quality of leads generated by all the channels in your advertising campaign — both online and offline — by assigning a unique phone number to each campaign and making a phone call the most prominent call to action.

With this model, every lead in the campaign is accounted for. The call tracking software usually integrates with a web analytics tool such as Google Analytics or Mixpanel that lets you view browsing data for a caller.

How to choose the best call tracking software for your business
When evaluating call tracking software, don’t fall for a slick interface or low prices without considering eight important behind-the-curtain factors.
1. Number coverage
Call tracking involves publishing unique phone numbers across all your campaigns. If you’re targeting a global market for your advertising, you must make sure the service provider you choose offers phone numbers of the type you use in the country of your choice.

2. Dynamic number generation
A call tracking application should be able to generate numbers dynamically for your campaigns. This means that, if you drop JavaScript code in your pages (like a Google Analytics tag), the code itself should be able to show preset phone numbers based on the URL of the page, as defined in the software. Don’t do it manually — you’d have to spend a lot of time assigning numbers to pages, and that doesn’t scale beyond a few campaigns. Also, assigning numbers to various pages manually may lead to errors if you make a mistake.
3. Integration with third-party services
It’s easier to derive deeper insights about phone leads when you integrate call tracking software with other tools you use within your organization. For example, integrating call tracking software with a web analytics tool can give you insights about a caller’s browsing history on the site; integrating with a CRM tool can help you understand the entire sales cycle of an offline lead. Ease of integration with other tools is thus an important factor to consider.
4. Customization flexibility
Every business is different in the way it uses data. The way you want to use call tracking data for your business may differ from how others do. For example, if you want to trigger a certain real-time action for your sales representatives (such as screen pops or CRM database lookups) when a call comes in and that action isn’t built in to the software, you should be able to code it using the service provider’s API. The ability to customize the application plays an important role in how you make good use of the insights generated.
5. Uptime and reliability
Once you choose a call tracking solution, all of your customer calls will go through that service provider’s infrastructure, so the solution should be able to promise high uptime and call quality. Without them, you’ll lose leads and lose credibility among prospective customers.
6. Call recordings and transcriptions
Call recordings and transcriptions can provide a wealth of information about your prospective customers and their needs. Over time, you should be able to spot patterns in the way prospective customers enquire about your products, and the terminology they use to communicate pain points and the like. You can feed this information back into the system to fine-tune your marketing copy and your advertising strategy.
Call recordings can also help you learn how your sales representatives handle calls so you can provide feedback as required.
7. Detailed analytics
Your call tracking solution should cover you on basic analytics such as caller ID, call time and date, caller location, call source, call duration, and caller details. These details should be available in real time. You should also be able to derive insights from historical data such as information on repeat callers and patterns on call volumes and call duration, which can help in optimizing your marketing strategy.
8. Affordability
Cost becomes an important factor to consider when your campaign size increases and call volumes pick up. Since each of your incoming sales calls goes through the call tracking system, you should choose a solution that offers the best rates for calling minutes and phone numbers. Phone number costs matter because when you start scaling your campaigns you could be buying a lot of phone numbers.
It’s all about conversion
What gets measured gets managed. If you’ve held off on doing offline advertising for the lack of a data-driven approach in the model, call tracking is the way to go. Measure your leads. If you’ve ever had the urge to build something, but were too scared or skeptical of learning to code, my advice to you is just try it.
Coming from a non-technical background, I’ve always been intimidated by the idea of learning to code. Not only did it seem too complex for me to understand, but I was also unsure as to how to go about starting. Amongst other qualities, that’s what makes Rails Girls so wonderful. They give you a foundation, tools to start, and the support of friendly coaches who help guide you through a fairly easy tutorial. Building an app in a few hours seemed overwhelming on the days leading up to Rails Girls, but when the day comes, you’re surrounded by others who know as little as you do, making the workshop much less intimidating. And although the coaches have years of experience, I didn’t feel like an idiot for having a question or for having a syntax error… make that a few syntax errors.

I always knew there would be a lot involved in learning a programming language, but what I didn’t know was how strong and supportive the Rails community is. Developers want to build cool things, but they also want to help others do the same. They support one another by sharing code and making it open source, which makes development much easier, especially for those just learning. Because of resources like Twitter Bootstrap and Ruby Gems, basic add-ons like buttons and forms take only a minute to add instead of hours. The accessibility of these tools lowers the barrier for people, such as myself, who are interested in building something that works and is aesthetically pleasing.

After one workshop, will this be something I’m going to continue? Yes. While I don’t have intentions of becoming a full time developer (right now at least), I do think that it’s a critical skill to have. To be able to see your ideas come to life without relying on someone to do it for you is empowering and liberating. Here are a few additional tips I learned:
- Keep your code clean and organized. It will make it easier to work with and to share with others.
- Every little detail matters. Always double check your punctuation and spacing.
- There’s a lot you can do with basic tools, and the internet is full of them!
So if you’re scared to learn, don’t be. If you don’t think you have the right mind for it, you do. At least give it a shot before dismissing it as something that’s not right for you. Who knows, you might just have fun.

Plivo Launches SDK That Lets Developers Connect WebRTC And SIP

“WebRTC, the new in-browser framework for real-time video and audio chats, will likely be a major trend this year. While it’s exciting for developers to easily add browser-to-browser chat features to their apps, however, being able to call regular phones from the web and to integrate WebRTC into existing calling solutions is still a necessity for many developers. The YC-backed VoIP startup Plivo, which raised a $1.75 million funding round last month, just launched a new SDK that makes it possible for developers to connect their WebRTC apps to standard SIP lines.
This means users can call regular phone lines from their browsers over WebRTC and, maybe more importantly, developers can integrate WebRTC into existing calling solutions for call centers and enterprises. This, of course, also works the other way around, and users can use their regular SIP-based numbers to call WebRTC users.
As Plivo co-founder Venky Balasubramanian (who goes by Venky) told me earlier today that this new SDK allows developers to bring “the past and today together.” Many businesses still rely on standard landlines, after all, and while Venky acknowledged that being able to add some WebRTC functionality to existing web apps is interesting, he noted that “just WebRTC isn’t good enough,” as the real power of WebRTC is only unleashed when it can interoperate with other systems, too. Enterprises that want to use WebRTC especially need to be able to integrate it into their existing workflows, and the new Plivo SDK wants to help them do so.
